4 Ways To Create A Simpler Layout For Your Website

Many newbie web designers make their websites far more complex than they need to be. They try to create fancy designs to impress their users. Unfortunately, overly complex designs tend to turn visitors away. It is a good idea to create a simple layout if you want to reduce your bounce rate and improve your conversions. Here are some tips that can help you out.

Understand Typography

Many novice web designers focus too heavily on graphics. You will quickly realize that some basic typography changes can drastically improve your overall design. Here are some tips that you will want to follow when creating your own website.

  • Make sure that headlines stand out. They should be bold and at least 18 pt. font.
  • Choose your font type carefully. Serif typeface may be a good font to use if you have a lot of content on your page. The San Serif typeface is great for headlines. Times New Roman and Georgia fonts may work fine if you have about 500 words of copy on most pages.
  • Structure sentence and paragraphs for the web. Your entire webpage may look cramped if you have more than 3 sentences in a paragraph. It is a good idea to break your copy up.

Choosing your font sizes and types is a critical part of web design. It is also one that most web designers neglect. You don’t want to make that mistake.

Place More Emphasis on Key Elements

Some page elements are significantly more important than others. You will want to draw attention to the webpage elements that add the most value to your site.

Oleg Mokhov made a really good point on his post on HongKiat.com. Mokhov said that 20% of the elements on the page add 80% of its value. You will want to identify those elements and give them the attention that they deserve.

Limit the Scope of Your Color Palette

Most new web designers have a difficult time creating a balanced color scheme. Some create a uniform color scheme for both their background and foreground, which means that all of their page elements blend together and their text is difficult to read. Others use so much color that visitors almost feel blinded when they look at the page.

You will want to be more careful when choosing a color pattern. Many designers recommend choosing three or four colors for their layout. You can use tools such as Kuler or Daily Color Scheme to see how different color patterns would work together.

Add More White Space

Your first instinct as a new designer is probably to add as much content to your website as possible. Unfortunately, too many images and text can easily overwhelm the viewer.

You need to avoid making your website looked too cramped if you want to keep people on your site. It is very important to add some white space. You should leave plenty of space around your most important page elements. They will attract more attention if they seem to be floating in the page.
